TEA TIME IN SPONGE CITY
Video and mixed media installations by Cece Cole
July 31 - extended through October 30, 2025
Cece Cole is the current artist-in-residence at De Sarthe Gallery.
Cole’s De Sarthe Gallery installation exhibition, titled Tea Time in Sponge City, developed over the last year in her studio and was adapted to the gallery space to create an immersive and inviting experience.
Cece envisions surreal landscapes of the future, with purposeful experimentation and an economy of materials. Arranged in tangential grid patterns, evidence of the hand at work is represented in functional storage and modular constructions. Her photography and video projections capture meditative moments of natural and pedestrian phenomena.
Themes within her sculptural vignettes explore ecosystems, urban planning, and landscape architecture. Cece is intrigued by alternative/regenerative farming practices as well as simulated, utopian, and controlled environments such as Biosphere II*. Aspects of nurturing and Zen gardening are reflected in the cultivation of wellness-focused Spirulina algae, aloe, tea, and herbs.
Cole is influenced by her experience in film/set production and is notably inspired by Noguchi’s Playgrounds, and the architects Arakawa and Gins’ The Site of Reversible Destiny. She investigates large-scale to DIY algae production, “sponge cities,” and nature-based infrastructure in her conceptual research.
Originally from Louisiana, Cole lives and works in Scottsdale, AZ. Her work exhibits nationally, internationally, and locally. Cece is also an independent curator operating at the gallery at Mountain Shadows Resort Hotel, and she produces public, site-specific, exhibition-themed programs and small-edition publications.
*Biosphere 2 is a 3.14-acre, world-leading scientific research facility in Oracle, Arizona, owned and operated by the University of Arizona, that houses six distinct, controlled biomes.

Site-specific, interactive, outdoor sculpture.
The word “sorry” is constructed from a series of modular frames arranged to create small rooms for contemplation. The outdoor sculpture functions as an armature for seating and interchangeable, suspended artworks. Viewers navigate the spaces between letters, tracing the word with their movements. Text is legible only from above. LOCATION: Private residence/open desert landscape along a highly trafficked flight pattern for planes and helicopters. Installation scheduled for valley-wide, collaborative community exhibition Every Day is Earth Day : Form, Space, and Vision, 2024. https://www.cccole.com/everyday-is-earth-day

AT ADA GALLERY, RICHMOND, VA. JULY, 2022
Group Show, Curated by John Pollard
Cece Cole examines themes of phenomenology, nature, and ecology in her site-specific installations and sculptural drawings. Intrigued by simulated environments driven by utopian ideas, Cole transforms economical and temporal materials into experiential works that evoke moments of wonder and contemplation.
In her series, Geodes (1-2), Cole culls materials from a collection of cut drawings and digital photographs generated in her studio practice. Her compositional strategies are informed by decorative and design practices. Layers of shapes, color, transparency with histories of mark-making, pattern, and imagery resemble fragmented rock formations, terrestrial ecosystems, or grotto-esque vignettes.
Cece Cole holds an MFA from the University of Iowa. She currently lives and works in Arizona.
